We never back our horses until they are at least three
years old, sometimes later. As much as we can, we allow our horses to live
naturally.
From the time they are born, they have large hilly pastures
to run in and streams and ponds to drink from. We usually wean late,
leaving the foals with the broodmare bands until they are almost a year
old. Studies have shown this to beneficial for the young horses (builds
good horse sense and self-esteem), and as the broodmares have plenty of
feed, it doesn't stress them. In the course of their lives they learn to
deal with deer and elk, coyotes badgers and porcupines, handle rough
ground, cool off in ponds, evade gopher and badger holes, jump the ditches
and rocks --- you know --- just how to be horses. The later after
they have matured they learn to be our companions and helpers.
So if you think that being started right means being left to be a horse
(under supervision) maybe one of our bunch would suit you. If you like to
start your horses earlier than 3 or 4 years, these guys have still had a
good beginning.
