Why
Anatolian Shepherds? When we first moved to
our larger place on Brownlee Road, the local coyote population thanked us
for the smorgasbord that we provided them! They dined royally on a new
born foal; a barn cat never lived longer than a few months; and we didn't
even consider other such taste treats as sheep or chicken. Our Border
Collie was also fair game, and his furry butt was saved only by timely
intervention.
We cannot guard 24/7, so after a long internet
search, we became intrigued by this particular breed of dog that has been
bred selectively for centuries as livestock protectors. Originally from Turkey, finding
an Anatolian requires almost as much leg work and miles as finding a good
horse!
Our first Anatolian came from
Montana, our second (Jesse) from Texas, and the male (Barlow) from
western Oregon. In November of 2007 we traveled back to southern Oregon to
get two new females after Jesse died. We've added Zippy and Minka to our
Anatolian group, future brides of Barlow.
We have found the Anatolians to be very loyal to
what they consider their pack, and they can have a wide latitude of what
their pack is. You can bond them at weaning to a specific animal species
and they will live their lives out with those animals protecting them.
Or they can have a broader scope and protect any and all on your property.
